Gable end and verge of a slate-roofed house
Dry verge systems

Dry verge systems
for gable ends.

The verge is the edge of the roof at the gable, and mortar there cracks and lets tiles lift. A dry verge system fixes every edge tile mechanically — and we fit it alongside your fascia, soffit and gutters.

01 / About this service

What a dry verge system does

At a gable end the last tiles of the roof meet the wall. Traditionally the edge is bedded in sand-and-cement mortar. Over the years that mortar shrinks, cracks, takes in water and loses its grip, and in a storm edge tiles lift or slip. A dry verge system replaces the mortar with interlocking units that clip over the tile edge and are screwed into the verge batten, so every edge tile is mechanically fixed to the structure rather than stuck on.

Mechanical fixing of ridge, hip and verge tiles is what the current slating and tiling code of practice (BS 5534) expects. Mortar alone does not meet it. Dry verge units also finish the gable edge cleanly, with no annual re-pointing.

We include it on this site because the verge is part of the roofline: it sits against the barge board and fascia, and the water that runs off the gable ends up in the same gutter system we fit. If we are replacing your fascia, soffit and gutters, it makes sense to deal with a failing verge at the same visit and the same scaffold.

02 / Options

What we can do for you.

Aluminium dry verge units

Our preference on exposed and coastal sites — plastic units age faster in salt and sun.

Plastic dry verge units

A sensible option on sheltered sites; the right choice depends on exposure, which we judge at the survey.

Fitted with fascia and soffit

Done together with a roofline replacement so the barge board, verge and gutter finish as one.

Existing verge repairs

Where the tiles are sound we re-fix and make good rather than replace everything.

03 / What's included

07 / FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is a dry verge system?

Interlocking units that clip over the edge tiles at a gable and are screwed to the verge batten, replacing mortar bedding. Every edge tile is mechanically fixed.

Is mortar at the verge a problem?

Mortar cracks and loses its grip over the years, which is how edge tiles lift in storms. Current practice (BS 5534) expects verge tiles to be mechanically fixed, which a mortar bed alone does not provide.

Aluminium or plastic units?

Aluminium is our preference on exposed and coastal sites because plastic ages faster in salt air and sun. On a sheltered site plastic can be sensible; we decide at the survey.

How much does it cost?

We do not publish a standard rate — it depends on the length of verge and the access. You get a fixed written price after a free survey.

Can you do it with new fascia and gutters?

Yes, and that is usually the best time: one scaffold, one visit, and the barge board, verge and gutter finish together. See gutter replacement.
